- Step 1 – Let the henna paste dry. This usually takes 15-30 minutes. The weather and your body temperature both effect dry time.
- Step 2 – Seal the dry henna paste with lemon sugar solution.
- Step 3 – Wear the henna paste for a minimum of 4 hours, 6 hours for maternity henna, 8 hours for bridal mehndi.
- Step 4 – gently scrape the henna paste off the skin to reveal the fresh stain. Natural henna stains the skin an orange/brown color which deepens over 24-48 hours to a rich mahogany.
Henna stains typically last 1-3 weeks. Stain longevity is determined by personal body chemistry and how well the henna was cared for.
Use olive oil to remove stubborn henna paste.
Henna looks different on everyone. Body chemistry, temperature and location on the body have a lot to do with how dark the stain will be. Drier skin on the hands and feet stains much darker than the softer skin on the upper arm or back. Henna stains are darkest during the first 7-10 days, then gradually fade.
What causes variation in the shades of henna stains?
Dryer skin has more layers of dead skin cells for the henna to saturate. This is why some areas of the skin, like the palms, produce a darker stain than others.
Stain Progression
Henna stains take a full 48 hours to develop. After henna paste is initially removed, the stain will appear bright orange for the first half day or so. The stain will then slowly darken to a shade of brown.
